La Femme a L' Orchidee by Edgard Maxence
Entitled La Femme a L' Orchidee - apparently the model for this picture was the youngest daughter of the maker of Job cigarette papers (hence the cigarette). Maxence often enriched the surface of his works with gold or silver foil and gilt plaster relief and this picture has some kind of texture added to the surface above or beneath the paint. The frame measures 35 inches by 29 inches and the picture measures 17 inches by 22 inches. Signed and dated 1900.
Edgard Maxence, French painter. He was a pupil of Jules-Elie Delaunay and Gustave Moreau at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris, and helped to popularise Symbolism in the 1890's. See more details of Maxence on my Sculptors and Artists page.

The original of this picture is in the Musee de Orsay, Paris. When we purchased this picture it was in its original gesso frame which was badly damaged and full of woodworm, thus the reason for reframing. We don't know the age of this picture but we guarantee it is not a recent print.
